The Spicy Veggie Burger Recipe Served in Top Kitchens – Now You Can Make It at Home!

Pip Bradley

Warning! This spicy veggie burger recipe packs a mean heat and flavour punch! Please proceed with caution! Well, you can add as much or as little heat as you would like but man oh man, this is one of my go-to’s and personal fav recipes I have written.

Pips Hot Sauce is of course the main ingredient to making this the best spicy bean burger recipe out there,  it can be made veggie or vegan, so all preferences are welcomed. I love making veggie recipes that taste great, this one combines the richness of the mushrooms with the heartiness of the black beans, leaving you full and satisfied.

Why This Spicy Veggie Burger Stands Out

I am not going to bang on about the nutritional value or some quaint antidote about how I developed this recipe, just know, that this is a very tasty, quick and easy spicy veggie/vegan recipe that should be one of your weekly staples.

So why does this veggie burger recipe stand out from the crowd? Well, first of all, it's so simple and easy to make! A game changer for those in a rush or quite simply, for those who can’t be bothered with standing in the kitchen all day!

Also, unlike store-bought veggie burgers, which are ultra-processed, this is made with fresh and natural ingredients, just like Pips Hot Sauce.

And Finally, It’s loved so much that even the Hare & Hounds and The Plough Harbourne have this veggie burger recipe on their menu! Now you can make it at home too… so let's get cooking bab!

Ingredients - What You’ll Need To Get Your Hands On!

  • 1 x medium onion

  • 750g of brown mushrooms

  • 1 x tin of black beans

  • salt & Pepper for seasoning

  • 1 x tablespoon of Hendersons Relish (vegan Worcestershire sauce) for that intense umami hit

  • 1 x tablespoon liquid smoke

  • 3 x veggie stock cubes

  • 1.5 x cups of vital wheat gluten (used to bind ingredients, add structure, and create a firm, meat-like texture in plant-based recipes.)

  • 1.5 tablespoons Pip's Hot Sauce La Boca del Diablo rub to add that smoky, fiery depth

  • Don’t forget one of Pips Hot Sauce's Best Sellers for the topping, all so very different from anything you find in the supermarkets!

Pips Spicy Veggie Burger Recipe - Easy Step-By-Step Instructions

Step 1: Sauté the Onions & Mushrooms

  • Finely chop and fry onions with salt & pepper until soft and before they brown

  • Blitz the shrooms into a chunky paste, but keep a few bits in there for texture.

  • Mix the onions and shrooms in a bowl together

Step 2: Mash & Mix

  • Drain and mash up the black beans (leave a little texture). Again like the shrooms, mash them up a lot but not 100%. Add to the bowl

  • Crush the stock cubes into the bowl and then add the Henderson’s Relish, Liquid Smoke, and Pip’s Hot Sauce rub.

Step 3: Add Structure & Shape the Patties

  • Add the vital wheat gluten. Mix like mad!

  • The mixture should still look quite wet, but it's ready when a slightly stringy dough forms.

  • Shape using a cookie cutter for speed and a perfect pro patty look

Step 4: Bake, Then Grill or Fry

  • Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 15 minutes per side.

  • Store in the fridge or freezer for later.

  • For the best flavour, grill or pan-fry before serving and add on one of Pips Hot Sauces as an extra Spicy topping!

  • Don’t forget your burger bun!

Veggie Pattie Recipe Notes

I make 10-12 portions from the recipe, depending on how generous I am, so it’s banging for all you meal preppers and cost-effective too.

The burger is totally vegan, but let’s be real, not everyone who skips meat is into full-on vegan meals (aka my partner Matt - I am looking at you!).

I like to add lettuce, pickles and hot sauce (obviously!!). I use Nagatropolis, but that’s only for those brave with the heat! Also some Mexicana cheese, mustard and mayo. But DIY with your fav toppings of course!

Final Thoughts on My Spicy Veggie Burger Recipe

There you go! Matt and I make these spicy black bean veggie burgers on the regular, it’s a recipe I am pretty chuffed with and I can’t wait for you to have a go!

The burger isn’t just a great plant-based burger alternative, it’s really good for anyone who loves big flavours. The combination of black beans, mushrooms, and Pip’s La Boca del Diablo rub creates a depth of spice that brings a plain burger alive. Stack it high with bits and bobs and your favourite sauce, and you’ve got a burger that rivals any restaurant version.

Don’t forget to grab yourself a bottle of Pips Hot Sauce to take your homemade burgers to the next spicy level, all made with quality natural ingredients too (psst…we also do a lovely green sweet chilli sauce for those who want a sweeter milder taste).
